Denise I'll be on CityLine this Monday

Hey Everyone! I'll be on CityLine this Monday! It's on CityTV at 9am. I'm doing a sewing segment and talking about what to look for when buying a sewing machine. During the segment, I do a sewing challenge with the guest hosts and have them make a super fabric wallet. Here are the instructions.

Set your DVR!

FABRIC WALLET

Cut out:
  • two 9" x 12" fabric pieces (one for lining, one for cover)
  • one 4 1/2" x 2 1/2" fabric piece (for strap closure)

Lily Random Just felt like sharing!

Hi folks!

I haven't written a post in awhile and I figured instead of asking questions I'd change things up a bit!

Not sure if you'll care or not, but if you do this is worth your while. I was browsing around Etsy for some inspiration and stumbled upon a shop that I thought was SO adorable! Check out The Petite Chouette. There are loads of lollipops, icecream, panda bears and cute little bows incorporated i

Candace Potter Hello

Hello Fello Sewers!!! Today, in this blog I will talk about my new sewing obbsession. So, I guess I will tell you the story. It all started when my horrible teacher assigned a quite boring project to us. It was like this economy thing and we had to create a product and blah blah blah.. So anyways my group decided to make bracelets, and since I was the only one with a sewing machine, I decided to make it. I looked everywhere to find out how to make a fabric bracelet. Finaly, I g

Lily Random The importance of "lining" fabric

Hi there!

I hope all your projects are all coming along nicely. Feel free to share! :)

I'm going to be doing a dress pattern soon. It's "Very Easy Vogue", but looks hard for me. Glad I picked that skill level!

Anyway, the bodice part of the dress calls for lining. Is this just to add extra thickness and a nice feeling against the skin? Could I just use the dress fabric as lining material (I have an over-abundance anyway), or is there something special abou

Lily Random Help? Again?

Have you ever heard of a machine doing this?:

1) My thread tension is set to automatic and I'm sewing stretchy material with a stretch tricot needle.

2) Top thread breaks while sewing

3) I take the thread out (pulling down and not up).

4) turn the machine off, then turn it back on

5) Re-thread - but the tension is SOOO tight it's really hard to pull the thread through to the needle. It's just grabbing onto that thread for dear life.

6) I un-th

Lily Random Knickerbockers

These were done using a FREE pattern from Fitzpatterns. This pattern is great - highly recommended! Anything that's free makes me feel like I beat the system or something. And there are pockets :) . Unfortunately the instructions link wasn't working for me, but if you follow the

Lily Random First request for assistance!

So I finished my purse last night. My mother-in-law gave me the pattern, plus denim material and lining to do it with. What a nice lady. I bought sew-in-interface because the pattern called for it.

Is it normal that my sewing machine could not handle the thickness of it at the end of the project? I mean, in some cases it was going through about 6 layers of denim (because of the way I had to fold the strap, dictated by the pattern instructions), plus the interfacing. It seems li

Lily Random Projects

Thought I'd share a couple of my first projects.

This was my first one, based off the zipper-front dress tutorial of secretlifeofabionerd's. Maybe it's also in a style lab? Dunno, but I used youtube anyway. It's a little too much plaid for me... wish I had made the top part a solid colour, but actually I can fold the dress up and under and voila, it's a cute shirt!

Lily Random Rotary mat!

I bought a rotary mat and rotary blade last night!! Cutting the rest of the fabric from pattern pieces became many times easier. I am so, so, so, so happy I bought it. I also got a chalk pen with refills instead of using my big chunky tailor's chalk, so transferring construction markings from the pattern to the fabric is now so, so much easier.

Having the right tools makes life better!
